WAY TO BE subtle, Ty, I thought, as I watched him dash off past his mother in the direction of the bar, but there was no way I could make the same escape while under the intense scrutiny of Ryan Harrison as the four of us came to a stop in front of him and Peggy Kincaid.
“Where’s Ty going?” Katie asked as she stopped beside her mother. “I swear, I feel as though he’s avoiding me tonight.”
No, that would be me he’s avoiding. I barely managed to stop myself from saying that as I made the conscious decision to lock eyes with Ryan, who was, yep, still scowling at me. That was when I decided it was high time that this fucker knew how close I was to this family, and that no amount of glaring, warning off, or basic assholery was going to have me running for the hills.
“How you doing tonight, Ryan?” I asked, and from the look on his face, the answer was obvious enough. His lips were pinched and his brow furrowed. He looked pissed off, irritated, but was trying to mask it the best he could.
“I’m fine. And you?”
I wasn’t sure why his discomfort made me relax, but it did. Maybe I was the asshole…nah, that award still went to the guy who hadn’t bothered to make an effort to get to know anyone in Tyler’s life, which was probably one of the reasons he felt so out of place today. Served him right.
“I’m great,” I told him, suddenly feeling pretty fucking fantastic. “Have you had a chance to meet Katie, Tyler’s sister?”
Ryan turned to look in her direction and smiled, and Katie gave him a small grin. It was obvious she sensed the tension between the two of us and was unwilling to give her all until Tyler came back and made the introductions.
“They’re twins. Tyler’s the oldest,” I said. “Two minutes and thirty-two seconds apart. Did you know that?”
“I didn’t, actually,” Ryan said in a clipped tone.
Didn’t surprise me. If he wasn’t willing to meet the people in Ty’s life, I was hardly surprised he hadn’t bothered asking anything about him. I’d always suspected Ryan was a narcissist, but this just confirmed it. There was no way Tyler hadn’t mentioned his family; he loved them and talked about them constantly. So the fact that Ryan hadn’t bothered to ask questions just seemed…well, fucked up, if you asked me.
“Yes,” Katie said, beaming at me, and it was so welcoming and accepting that it warmed me to my very soles. “He lorded it over me my entire childhood. Still does.”
“Bet that’ll change when he reaches his thirtieth birthday,” I joked, and threw a wink in her direction.
“You know it will. He’ll be the first to deny being older than either of us.”
“Ohhh no,” I said with a laugh, and then downed the last of my scotch. “He will always be a month older than me. No way around that little factoid. What about you, Ryan?
